Hi Jason --

This is a great set of posts about Dan's chocolate making days. Thanks for sharing, and for your great set of articles about making chocolate from bean to bar. I remember how excited Dan was when you wrote about his original Kickstarter proposal last summer.

Dear Carole,

Your words are a tribute to Dan, because you have inspired me to continue to reach out to others, to take the time to know those in my community, and, yes, the folks who live right next door (here, mine are grad students, and they all have their 'stories'... i too was not lucky enough to meet Dan, but I have dear friends who agree that he 'had' a pulse on how to live to the fullest! You've encouraged me to attend his memorial service in Urbana. Bless you!

I didn't know Dan either. I have lived across the street from his family for the last eight years, and the only one of us who knew him is our 15-year-old daughter. She and her young friends took an instant liking to Dan, and even "initiated" him in to their club "The Caution Clan" because they used caution tape as a means of initiation. He went along with the plan. And he subsequently invited some of the girls over to visit his kittens. Our daughter has some wonderful memories of Dan, and I wish I could say the same. I guess one lesson in all of this is to step back, meet your neighbors, spend time with them and with those you love. Dan;s memorial service in Greenmeadow park was a beautiful tribute to a young man who meant so much to so many. I will cherish this memory of someone I did not know, and learn much from the people who did know and love him. And I will make sure to get to know my neighbors from now on.

Haha! Laurence, you are entirely correct. So funny. I remember I kept telling Rosie I wanted you to teach me how to cook after I found out that you were into the Slow Food movement, and just a good cook in general :) It's so great that we are connecting again because of Dan!

I will be back in town on August 16th or so (I'm working this summer up in Michigan), and will be there the entire semester, so just let me know how and when I can be of service.

Take care! And great to re-meet you!

I am with Jenny 100 percent. Count me in on anything that would help bring Dan's ideas to life. I would gladly volunteer my time. I feel to truly honor Dan is to work towards his vision for a better world and invoke his amazing spirit in doing so. Dan had an uncanny ability to bring people together in joyous, harmonious communion and collaboration, and will continue to do so. He was a precious gift to us all.

I do remember that day! When I saw Dan, I thought... wow it's totally a younger (and sweatier) Jonathan with crazy hair. Pretty cool. Like Justin mentioned, he was just done with a bike-ride. Sweaty he was allowed to be. We didn't get to hang out much longer after devouring the delicious ice cream. I guess it showed his natural sweet tooth. Perhaps why he got into chocolate? He did seem to be a joyous young lad.
